The club was formed in 1962 and is one of the few surviving junior rugby clubs in the Manly area. Formerly known as the Warringah Roos, the club colous and uniform has remained largely unchanged in 37 years. In that time the club has produced 5 players who have gone on to play for the Wallabies and countless others who have played grade rugby in the NSW competition. The club is very proud to have Peter Hewett, NSW Waratahs and Gary Flowers, CEO of the Australian Rugby Union, as our current patrons. How do the Roos fit into the overall club picture?The Roos are affiliated to Manly Junior Rugby, along with the Seaforth Raiders, Harbord Harlaquins and Forest Rugby Clubs. Each of these local village clubs pay affiliation fees to Manly Junior Rugby, who amongst other things administers area representative teams. The Roos Club Committee meets at Diggers on the Park, Ivanhoe Park (behind Manly Oval) on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7pm. Please feel free to attend if you have any questions or suggestions for the club.How many players are there in the club?The Roos will field teams in all age groups from Under 6's ( mini's ), right through to combined Under 17/18's ( juniors ) in 2008. After Under 17/18's the Roos are a feeder into Manly Rugby Union Colts grade. In 2007 there were approximately 260 registered players. Comprising 6 teams in the Mini's (1 each in Under 6 and under 7 and two each in under 8 and under 9) and 9 teams in the Juniors. (2 in Under 10's, 1 in Under 11's, 1 in Under 12's, 2 in Under 13's, 1 in Under 15's, 1 in Under 16's and 1 in Under 17/18's) How did the Roos perform last season?The Mini's
performed excellently and had great fun, but they do not play in competition.
How is the club funded?The Roos recieve NO Australian, NSW or Manly Rugby Union funding. Money comes from registration fees, merchandise sales, Saturday canteens, social functions and limited private and corporate sponsorship. The Roos Committee, which is made up of hard-working parents, always welcomes new fund raising initiatives, ideas and a helping hand. Does the club have regular social functions?Yes, There are normally two functions - a dinner/dance and a trivia night - during the season in addition to other opportunities for families to socialize together. There is a real family spirit at the Roos as many players have siblings playing in other age groups within the club. We encourage you to also join the Manly Rugby Union, who now have new clubroom facilities, having merged with the Manly War Memorial Club and moved to their Raglan Street premises. How can I become involved as a parent?As all of the adminstration, coaching,and fund raising is voluntary, there are plenty of opportunities to become involved at Roos Rugby. What is the future direction of the club?With your support the club will continue to provide a safe and harmonious local environment for you or your child to participate and enjoy one of the truly great international team sports. The club is fuelled by the energy of all those that play, coach, support and manage it, and all on a voluntry basis. To ensure the club grows and prospers, find out what you can do to be a part of it. In addition the club has recently received a $20,000 grant form the Sports Council to jointly develop clubhouse and canteen facilities at Keirle Park with Manly Council. A $4,000 grant has also been given to council to further upgrade the lighting at Keirle Park. The Roos committe has commenced talks with Manly Council to progress the DA approval with a view to starting building works as soon as possible. |
